4 letters that have turned around Mitsubishi's fortunes. They stand for 'Plug-In Electric Hybrid' and with the technology available on the Outlander model, the compact SUV has seen Mitsubishi's sales soar. Thanks to an electric motor, batteries and a regular petrol engine, you can travel on electric alone and then when the batteries are empty, switch to the usual petrol power. This means the car has excellent economy and very low emissions.
The next step for the company is to expand their range of PHEV vehicles. The XR PHEV II Concept car on show at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show is just the beginning. Smaller than the existing Outlander, yet slightly bigger than the ASX, this is a compact SUV with sharp, edgy, styling that is sure to stand out.
I wish it would look like this if they make a production version in around a years time, but alas, it shall almost certainly be toned down a bit. Which brings us to the more hum-drum news on the Mitsubishi stand. The all-new L200 pick-up truck.
Hardly exciting, is it? But, then again, this is the UK's best selling pick-up and all new models in this segment are hard to come by. The engines on offer are quite interesting too. A 2.4 Diesel can be had in two flavours. The standard 151bhp variant, or a 178bhp version with a massive 317lb/ft of torque. You can even have it with a paddle-shift auto. The company also claims this is the lightest vehicle in class.
So, one crazy concept car and one surprisingly interesting pick-up. I for one are glad MM have found their mojo again.
